At Building Hope Project (BHP), every student’s journey matters. Some stories, however, are so impactful that they spark change beyond just one life—they create opportunities for many. Stella’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the birth of something greater than we ever imagined.

A Bright Light in Difficult Times

Stella first joined BHP as a Primary Five student when her family faced financial hardship after her older brother completed the program. From the start, she stood out—sharp, confident, and a natural leader. Even outside of our regular programming, Stella was always around, stopping by after school and on lunch breaks, eager to learn and support others. She excelled in secondary school, taking on extracurricular activities and making the most of every opportunity.

A Crisis and a Turning Point

Earlier this year, Stella’s family suffered another financial setback. The money they had saved for her secondary school tuition had to be used for food and basic survival. Desperate to stay in school, Stella pleaded with her secondary school for a scholarship but was denied. With just days left to pay her fees, her education was on the line.

That’s when a former BHP volunteer, who had once traveled to Uganda, heard about Stella’s situation. She immediately stepped in, saying, “The time is now for the secondary program to begin, and I am starting with Stella.”

And just like that, Stella didn’t just secure her education—she inspired BHP to take the next step in its mission.

A School is Born

Because of Stella, BHP launched its very own secondary school, ensuring that students like her never have to face the uncertainty of whether they can continue their education. Stella was the first student, but she will not be the last.

Now, as she continues to excel in school, she dreams of using her artistic talents as a musician and poet to share the stories of her home country with the world. Her journey is a testament to the power of education and the ripple effect of one person’s perseverance.

The Future is Bright

Stella’s story is just the beginning. Because of her, more students will have access to secondary education, breaking cycles of poverty and creating a future full of possibilities.
